And, I should note, that on the left side bar of belocal under like-minded blogs I link to author, Karen Seiger’s, website/blog.  For a while there I wasn’t sure whether she was going to continue updating the site with new posts … but she is … and they’re wonderful.

So, there are people who still don’t know about Etsy. Its true. I come across them all the time. I’m definitely not one to judge … but, really?  So, just in case you’re not in the loop  -  I shop Etsy for gifts, housewares, clothes, special treats, etc, like some people shop Bloomingdales, except when I buy its likely one of kind, and handmade.
Shop Etsy. Think about what you buy.  Support local artisans and craftsmen.
(oh, all right.  not to say that i never shop at Bloomingdales … )

LOCAL ARTISAN: Justin King / Woodworker
Knowing and respecting the person who made something I use or look at every day makes me enjoy and appreciate that something all the more.
Thats why I like to buy from local artisans and thats why I am sharing Justin King and his wood-wares (tables, desks, boxes, chairs, cribs, etc) with you.  Photographed by Rob Featherstone, these images give you a sneak peek into his craftmanship and talent.  And, I think if we’re likeminded individuals, its important to mention he is an awesome guy with a very cool family.
If you’re in the market for such pieces, please get in touch with me and I’ll direct you accordingly.  You can also try seeking him out at the Beacon Farmer’s Market this summer where he may be selling some smaller pieces.

SUNDAY FUNDAY
Hop shops around the western most corner of the lower east side and check out my favorite stores. Start with the Young Designers Market on Mulberry.  Say hello to some of my new and old friends Issy Salomon Jewelry, Devils May Care T-shirts and belt buckles, and Alexandra Beth leather and costume jewlery.
Walk Mott Street and stop in the lovely Coclico.
Head East to Elizabeth and Bowery. I can always find at least one thing at Anemone that I must have (most recently a grandfather like cropped boxy woven cardigan) and can actually afford.  miss hoe’s new store makes me smile.  And, its particularly satisfying to know she began at young designer markets and fairs.  Her store is the realized dream.
stop for food or just an incredible ice cream sundae at DBGB Kitchen.
And if day is turning to night, check out bingo night at Bowery Poetry Club for two dollar cards at 6 pm.

LOCAL ARTISAN: We Are Land Rich in Brooklyn, NY
I came across the above pictured dreamcatcher at the renegade craft fair last weekend and bought one for a friend who just completed her PHD in psychology.  So beautiful. A bit pricey, but sometimes you happen upon something and you realize it’s what you’ve been looking for the whole time.
Check out what they’re about on their website.
