SHOP PROFILE: Coffee Lab Roasters in Tarrytown, NY
Not only delicious coffee but an environmentally friendly business. Owners Alice Kelligrew and Mike Love say that 80% of their coffees are sustainable and they recycle as much as possible - normal recycling with plastic and glass, as well transforming burlap sacks into shopping bags, etc and coffee grinds are sent to Stone Barns to be added to their compost program. Get your hands on the most recent issue of The Valley - Table magazine to read an impressive profile on the shop. Sold in local Whole Foods markets, and in various restaurants and cafes, you can easily get a taste of the coffee, though not the notable store itself.

United Methodist Church Pumpkin Patch in Mount Kisco, NY
Yesterday, the Methodist Church of Mount Kisco started their yearly tradition of selling a huge array of pumpkins on their front lawn brought in from a Navajo Reservation in New Mexico and organized through Pumpkin Patch Fundraisers. My sister in law, a proud Mount Kisco resident, caught the local basketball team on camera unloading all the pumpkins from the truck to the lawn as my nephew ran around taking in the sights. Big, small, orange, green, white (green? white?), smooth, knobby pumpkins. You can see from the pictures - the pumpkins are gorgeous. And, the best part is that Mount Kisco is a terrific tiny Westchester town just 50 minutes north from NYC on Metro North, relatively close to NJ and CT and makes for a great day trip. You can take the train right into town and walk around before pumpkin picking and if you’ve access to a car you can sightsee the beautiful estate homes and farms up in the hills. There are plenty of cabs waiting outside the train if you want to go somewhere further than downtown Main Street.
When I go to get my pumpkins for the season, I’ll also be having dinner in Mount Kisco at the Flying Pig, a restaurant known for its farm-to-table fare. I suppose I’ll be gushing over it soon enough. I haven’t done the town justice for all it has to offer, but for right now, the pumpkins are where its at.
